Thoughts on the use of animals. As pets, food, research subjects.

A great article in the New Yorker this week discussing how much Americans love their pets, but also love their burgers. It's got me thinking about animal research again -- I know, our favorite topic!

We have so many strict regulations when it comes to using animals as research subjects, but it seems that slaughter houses have it so easy. This makes no sense to me.

Yes I am a vegetarian, but some of my Pumas are leather and I will never give up cheese.. and I don't try to persuade others to stop eating meat, but perhaps we should take a fraction of the energy we spend either protesting against or defending the use of animals in scientific research and put that into looking at agricultural abuse of animals (I'm talking to you, science bloggers!).

Agreed Dr A! This is a very important front in the battle to improve animal welfare. Probably the best thing one can do for animal welfare is to stop eating meat. Unfortunately we again get in to the ridiculous argument that humans are separate and special. This leads to the stupidity that is respecting ridiculous religious beliefs over respecting animal welfare - as a very beginning Halal and Kosher methods of killing have to go.

I wish everyone could go o a chicken place and see how that is done. Why? Because for sure the eggs and the chicken industry is something I loathe...

If nothing else, I would think that people who eat meat and eggs (and milk) should visit a regular farm at least once. It is very easy to voice an opinion about "expensive meat" if you haven't seen how much stuff is had to be done in order to have all those cows and pigs. I am sure that plenty more people would be vegetarian (or at elast think about not eating meat every day) if they actually took responsibility and went to the origin of the food.

/the steak lover but I then to do organic/free range more expensive beef since that is SO much tastier ;)
